Figure 11-1. GUI Help Page

The online help of the ComPact graphical user interface allows you to read the HTML version of this manual in one of your browser windows, or to start a document viewer for the PDF or Postscript versions of one of the manuals. The dir1/2/3 frames (5/6/7) are used to display the table of contents of the GUI manual, while all chapters, sections, and subsections can be displayed in the bottom part of the screen by a simple click on the header in the contents table.

In addition to the global help available from the navigation frame (1) in the top-left corner of every page, you can get context-sensitive help for all the commands available on the bottom part of the screen. This is possible in the contexts of package management, project management, pool management, and configuration by simply clicking on the rightmost button in the command group menu (8). In most cases this short help will be all you need to continue your work with the graphical user interface.

As you obviously have found this manual if you are reading these lines, you already have found out how and where to look for help, and we won't bother you with more tedious details about how to find online help and documentation. We would like to offer some final words of wisdom though:

A famous saying among programmers is: "If all else fails, read the documentation". You will probably avoid a lot of unnecessary work and annoyance if you care to read the manuals even before this point. It is also often helpful to remember that most of the things that seem to be bugs in your newest and greatest software application product are really intended as features or due to wrong use and misunderstanding.
